If you're an Illawarra parent looking for a sport that builds confidence, discipline, and physical fitness in your child, judo is well worth considering. Unlike striking-based martial arts, judo is a grappling art — there's no punching or kicking involved. Instead, children learn throws, holds, and most importantly, how to fall safely through a skill called ukemi (breakfalling). This focus on safe falling is something kids carry with them for life, whether they're on the playground or the sports field.
Children can start judo from school age, and our Juniors class (Under 15s) caters to a wide range of abilities and experience levels. New starters are eased in gently — there's no pressure to keep up with more experienced kids. Our instructors are experienced at working with young judoka, making sure every child feels welcome and supported from their very first session.
Parents often tell us they notice real changes in their children after a few months of judo. Kids tend to become more respectful, more focused, and more willing to have a go at things outside their comfort zone. Judo's built-in etiquette — bowing onto the mat, respecting your training partner, listening to your instructor — naturally reinforces the kind of behaviour parents want to see at home and at school.
One of the great things about training at the Illawarra International Judo Club in Kembla Grange is that we're a community club with decades of history. We're not a franchise or a commercial gym — we're a club run by people who genuinely love judo and want to share it with the next generation of Illawarra kids.
We also accept NSW Active Kids vouchers, which can help offset the cost of membership and fees. If your child is curious about judo, the best way to find out if it's for them is to come along and give it a try. Your first class is completely free, and there's no need to book — just show up in comfortable clothing and we'll take care of the rest.
