One of the biggest myths about judo is that you need to start young. The truth is, adults take up judo all the time — and many wish they'd started sooner. Whether you're looking for a new way to get fit, a stress outlet after work, or simply something different from the usual gym routine, judo has a lot to offer adults of all ages and fitness levels in the Wollongong and Illawarra region.
Your first class will feel unfamiliar, and that's completely normal. You'll start with a warm-up, learn how to fall safely (this is the foundation of everything in judo), and then be introduced to a couple of basic techniques. You won't be thrown around by black belts on day one — our senior students and instructors are there to help you learn, not to show off. The atmosphere is supportive and good-humoured.
From a fitness perspective, judo is hard to beat. A single session works your entire body — grip strength, core stability, cardio, flexibility, and coordination all get a solid workout. Because you're learning skills and solving problems with a partner, the time flies in a way that treadmill sessions simply don't. Many of our adult members say judo is the first form of exercise they've actually looked forward to.
Beyond the physical benefits, the social side of judo is something people don't always expect. Training with a partner builds trust and camaraderie quickly. Our club has a genuinely welcoming community, and it's common for new adult members to form lasting friendships through training. After all, there's something about throwing each other around that breaks down social barriers pretty fast.
If you're in the Wollongong, Shellharbour, or wider Illawarra area and you've been thinking about giving judo a go, we'd love to see you on the mat. Your first class at IIJC is free, no booking required — just turn up in a tracksuit or comfortable clothing and we'll sort you out.
